American Dreaming and Other Stories is the 2005 winner of the Novello Literary Award.
Welcome to the American Dream. It can entice—but it can also disillusion—anyone brave enough to pursue it. In seven lively new stories full of energy and imagination, Doris Iarovici takes a frank look at the ironies of contemporary life.
American Dreaming and Other Stories is about people in transition. In “Waiting for Power,” an estranged couple rearranges their physical and emotional landscape after a storm. In the title story a Thai woman working as a housekeeper struggles to stay connected to her Americanized daughter. In “Facts,” a young medical student about to begin her own family travels to meet the father who abandoned her at birth. Each story stands comfortably alone, but together they create a powerful portrait of modern American life.
Author and physician Doris Iarovici explores the myths and realities behind that American ideal of self-made success. She mines the perspective of her own immigrant childhood to give us a glimpse into the newer faces populating these United States. Her characters, in the end, are familiar to us: flawed and fumbling, but resilient and hopeful—even in the most bewildering of times.

Reviews
“American Dreaming and Other Stories is an eccentric collection of seven stories depicting the modern pursuit of the American Dream from the perspective of Doris Iarovici who is herself an immigrant from Romania. Iarovici's unique writing style is enigmatic and tenacious, filled with enticing and engaging plots of intricate characters with individualistic ideals and aspirations, giving the reader a vivid and enrapturing concept of the enrapturing stories sure to engage them, making American Dreaming a very highly recommended read, perfect for the general fiction reader, particularly those with an interest in the alienating culture of modern America.”
Midwest Book Review
“Irresistible opening lines drew me into these pages, and wonderfully smart, engaging writing kept me there so very happily. What a keen eye and masterful hand Doris Iarovici brings to her stories, each a jewel, each delivering the pleasures and satisfactions of a novel in miniature.”
