Originally published in German, Erika Geiger’s biography of Erdmuth Dorothea Countess von Zinzendorf is impressive. Geiger engagingly describes the countess’s life as wife and co-worker of Nikolaus Ludwig Count von Zinzendorf, the founder of the Herrnhut Brüdergemeine, known to English speakers as the Moravian Church. With great energy, the countess applied her special gifts to their shared life’s work. She took over financial responsibility and, at times, was the ruling village authority in Herrnhut, home of the “Pilgrim Congregation.” She gave birth to twelve children, of whom only four survived childhood. Her deep faith and her organizational ability shaped the congregation. She was respectfully referred to as “God’s princess among us.”
Erdmuth Dorothea Countess von Zinzendorf was an unusual eighteenth-century woman. She served as financial overseer, estate manager, spiritual hymnist, wife, and mother.
