Bio/Memoir, Current Events/Politics

Howell Thomas Heflin of Alabama was one of the last of the Roosevelt-style Southern progressive Democrats to serve in the United States Senate. A large, folksy man, his engaging personal style masked a keen mind and political cunning that served him well in Washington and made him friends on both sides of the aisle. He is also one of the few politicians in recent history to have spent a career in the public eye and retired with his integrity intact.

This carefully researched authorized biography details the life of a man who grew up the son of a Methodist minister, graduated from a liberal arts college, became a highly decorated combat Marine in World War II, and then turned to the family businesses of law and politics. His uncle was Cotton Tom Heflin, one of the most famous senators of the early 20th century and a notorious racist demagogue. Howell Heflin, on the other hand, earned a reputation for fairness and progressive racial views. Before going to the U.S. Senate, where he remained for 18 years, he served as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. As chief justice, he earned national acclaim for his leadership of the reform of Alabama’s judicial system.

Reviews

“This is really a good book. It is an extremely effective counter to our growing alienation from government—I would not have believed that a political biography could have such a substantial impact on me, but it has really changed how I view our recent governments.”
Barry Clemson

“Outstanding lawyer, outstanding judge, outstanding United States Senator—Howell Heflin symbolizes the very best in public service. He rose to become a powerful force for progress, racial justice and civil rights, and one of the most respected Senators in history. His story should be required reading for all citizens who believe that one person can make a difference.”
Senator Edward M. Kennedy
