My Father's Beast is an allegory, told in the words of a child, about a father who is taken over by the "beast" of addiction. My Father's Beast is lavishly illustrated with paper collages. The colors and textures of the papers help to offset the impact of the emotionally difficult story line. Handmade papers in brilliant hues feed the aesthetic needs of the child who is reading and viewing the book. Gail Haley, a distinguished writer and illustrator, has brought her talents to a totally new medium. My Father's Beast is her first book illustrated by a patchwork of handmade papers, hand-printed designs, and photographic patches of texture. She is the only illustrator to have won both the Caldecott Medal and the Kate Greenway Medal.
