Like
all gifted photographers, Gregory Spaid is maker of compositions above
all. his eye combines a kind of cool, blunt realism with the
gentleness born of great affection. Each one of these images
contains a mix of shadings and textures that is always there, whether in
the shingled facades on 'Sconset houses in the morning light or in the
mist surrounding a tree in the graveyard on a foggy afternoon. When
you look at Spaid's photographs you can think that gray is the richest
color there is, and the most true to life. His Nantucket is as I
would always want to remember the island, at once crisp and soft. It
is outlined with sharp edges and at the same time it envelops us in a
glowing, mellow beauty. These images are simple and direct, and yet
they are resonant with controlled emotion. They bring us to a
Nantucket that seems fresh and full of new energy, and yet feels as if it
has been there forever, rolling on like the sea.
