A Short History of Watauga County is an update of histories published in 1915 and 1949. It is the first comprehensive history of Watauga County in more than 50 years.

about the author
Michael Hardy grew up in central Florida, but moved with his wife to the North Carolina High Country in the late 1990s. He is a reference librarian at Caldwell Community College, and has been an avid Civil War re-enactor since 1982. He has also volunteered as an interpreter at local museums and state and national parks, and has presented hundreds of programs for schools, libraries, scout troops, and churches. He is a past president of the Yancey Historical Association, and is currently on the board of the Avery County Historical Society and Museum, along with serving as historian for the Col. John B. Palmer Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
