Lauren Faulkenberry
Lauren Faulkenberry grew up in Kershaw, South Carolina, and currently works as a freelance illustrator, writer, and mural painter. While studying art at Washington University in Saint Louis, Faulkenberry dabbled in a variety of artistic endeavors—mostly ending in inky, paint-splattered "learning experiences"—and tried her hand at every material from oil pastel to PVC pipe. But it was there, during her third year and eighth inning that she discovered her passion for printmaking and handmade book production.
After countless cups of coffee (French roast, one cream) and in the throes of the midnight oil, she printed a small edition of a handmade version of her alphabet book What Do Animals Do on the Weekend? as her senior thesis project. In 2000 her book received the Nancy Kranzberg Book of the Year Award at Washington University. A copy now resides in the special collections department of the university's library.
What Do Animals Do on the Weekend? has since been published by Novello Festival Press. Lauren has appeared on WFAE's "Charlotte Talks" and was featured at Creative Loafing's Carolina Writers Night, where she read a comical essay about the alphabetical obsession that consumed her and inspired the story of how animals, two by two, enjoy their spare time.
