Alan Gerson

Habeas CircusAfter practicing law for three years, Alan Gerson, a New Orleans native, realized he was more interested in the color of the books and table at a deposition than he was the deposition. In 1992 he gave up his practice and returned to the art world full-time. He is an instructor of Foundations and Drawing at Loyola University and a full-time artist. He received an MFA from the University of New Orleans, a law degree from Tulane University, and a BA in Philosophy from Boston University. He was director of visual arts at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center from 1980 to 1985. He has exhibited nationally and internationally. Most recently he was invited to and participated in the Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy. He is represented by LeMieux Galleries in New Orleans and by Caelum Gallery in New York. His work is in the collections of New Orleans Museum of Art, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the Besthoff collection, and numerous private collections around the world.

An ongoing legacy of his years as a lawyer is a series of watercolors poking fun at the legal profession, skewering everyone from judges to clients, witnesses, juries and lawyers, alike. Some of these works have been compiled in his book, Habeas Circus: Illegal Humor.
