Gay Martin
Gay Martin, a native Tennessean who has lived in several southeastern states, now makes her home in Alabama. She attended colleges in Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Texas, graduating with majors in English and art in 1973. In 1975, she received a master’s degree in gifted education from the University of Alabama. She subsequently completed postgraduate work in the fields of English, writing, and journalism.
A member of the International Food, Wine, and Travel Writers Association, Martin has published over 350 articles in international newspapers and magazines and especially enjoys writing about travel in America’s Southeast. She has won more than 50 writing awards in various regional and national writing competitions. Her work has appeared in such publications as Modern Bride, the Boston Herald, the Times Picayune, Kiwanis, The Writer, Seventeen, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Birmingham News, the Grand Rapids Press, Off-Duty America, the Columbia Missourian, Instructor, Campus Life, the London Free Press, the Milwaukee Sentinel, the San Antonio Express-News, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and others.
Her travel books include Louisiana Off the Beaten Path and Alabama Off the Beaten Path.
Before making a New Year’s resolution to turn her writing pastime into a career, Martin taught high school for eleven years, served as a resource coordinator of her school’s program for gifted and talented students, and sponsored the school newspaper and literary magazine. Her honors include a fellowship from The Newspaper Fund to study journalism at the University of Missouri, a “Journalism Advisor of the Year” award from the Alabama Scholastic Press Association and the University of Alabama, and a national award from NEA-Kodak for a “Cameras in Curriculum” project. Martin and her husband, a dentist, have five children.
