Steve Schewel

Steve Schewel has lived in Durham since he came to Duke University as an undergraduate in 1969. He is a former member of the Durham Public Schools board, and he was recently elected to the Durham City Council. Steve is co-founder and president of the award-winning, Durham-based Independent Weekly, which celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2013. He is also a visiting assistant professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. Steve and his wife, Lao Rubert, have raised two sons in Durham. He is a longtime youth soccer coach, writer, reader, runner, and cyclist, and he fancies himself a pretty good cook.
