Sam Shumate
Samuel Estel Shumate was born in Warrensville, NC, April 19, 1937. Upon graduation from Lansing High School he entered the U.S. Air Force in 1955. After a four-year tour he entered Lees McRae Junior College where he earned his Associate in Arts degree in 1961. He transferred to Appalachian State Teachers College, graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree in 1963. He earned his Master of Arts degree in 1965 from Appalachian State University.
Sam taught at high schools in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Cranberry in Avery County, North Carolina, before returning to Warrensville to teach at the new consolidated Northwest Ashe High School. He spent twenty-five years at Northwest as an English and journalism teacher, assistant principal and principal, retiring in 1992.
Sam, along with his wife Linda, a retired school counselor, and their sons, Jonathan and Christopher, manage Buffalo Fir Company, a small Christmas tree farm, named for the creek that flows through Warrensville.
