7:30 a.m., Monday, December
16, 1957. A 78 rpm record begins to spin. An anxious Lee Kinard snuffs
out his 20th cigarette of the morning and faces the lone TV camera. A
finger points to him. He smiles.
"Hi, folks," he
says. "Welcome to 'The Good Morning Show.' Hope you had a great
weekend and that you're on top of the world this morning."
Thus was TV history made. For
40 years later, "The Good Morning Show" is still on the air, a
community institution in Piedmont North Carolina and parts of Virginia.
And Lee Kinard is still host. No other local show has ever lasted so
long. And no show in TV history has lasted so long with the same host.
In this book of celebration,
Lee Kinard takes the reader behind the scenes to tell not only how his
show came about and thrived against the stiffest competition that
national networks could throw against it, but also about the celebrities
and writers he's interviewed, the co-hosts he's worked with, the travels
that have taken him--and his viewers--throughout the world, and the
importance of the show in times of bad weather and community crisis.
Like "The Good Morning
Show," this book is warm and friendly and filled with interesting
information. Reading it is like sitting down for a long chat with an old
friend.
