If you think it is difficult
to find fifty historic restaurants in the state of Florida, you are
sadly mistaken. There are a surprising quantity of restaurants that are
housed in buildings at least fifty years old, and the quality of these
restaurants is first-rate.
Since Florida has been a
mecca for all types of tourists, the fifty restaurants that were chosen
for this book reflect a wide variety of dining experiences. The grandeur
of restored hotels like the Breakers, the Biltmore, the Don CeSar and
Casa Marina once again attracts kings, millionaires, socialites,
celebrities, and people drawn to fine dining. But Florida also offers
the rustic or hard-to-find place like the Cabbage Key Inn, Cap's Place
or Wakulla Springs Lodge. While dining in Florida, one can enjoy a range
of environments that include the Biltmore Hotel's gold-leaf ceilings,
crystal chandeliers, and chairs covered with tapestry and velvet to
feeding fish through open trap doors under the tables at Santa Maria.
The cuisines are as varied as
the atmospheres. They range from the exquisite French and continental
fare at La Vieille Maison to seafood favorites like the cold stone crabs
at Joe's Stone Crab. Robust Hispanic dishes from the Columbia are
featured alongside the down-home cooking of the Hopkins Boarding House.
From Fernandino Beach to Key
West, from the Panhandle to the glitzy Gold Coast of Palm Beach, Fort
Lauderdale and Miami, Florida's historic restaurants mirror the wide
range of tastes offered in the Sunshine State.
