The Publishing Laboratory of UNC Wilmington
The Publishing Laborotory of UNC Wilmington

The Publishing Laboratory of UNC-Wilmington

Established in 2000 under the visionary guidance of former CEO of HarperCollins and former visiting professor Stanley Colbert, the Publishing Laboratory at UNC Wilmington incorporates into the apprenticeship of creative writing students an applied learning experience in the process by which literary manuscripts are designed, shaped, and edited into books and published to a wide audience of readers. Under the mentorship of Emily Smith, director, and editor Ben George, MFA student interns work for the fully functioning micropress that issues original works under its own imprint.

The Publishing Laboratory seeks to publish distinct literary journals and books of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction that engage the world and create beauty, contribute to the variety and diversity of cultural expression, and make a humane impact on society.

For more information, please contact Emily Smith (smithel@uncw.edu), or visit the Publishing Laboratory Web site at www.uncw.edu/writers/PubLab.

Lookout Books

Ben George, editor of Ecotone, and Emily Louise Smith, director of The Publishing Laboratory, teamed up to found Lookout Books as the literary book imprint of the Department of Creative Writing at UNC Wilmington in an effort to seek out emerging and historically underrepresented voices, as well as works by established writers overlooked by commercial houses. In a publishing landscape increasingly indifferent to literary innovation, they envision Lookout as a haven for books that matter.
