How do new
dads teach their baby girls how wonderful they are? Why, by turning them
into the intrepid Pink Flash!
When her
husband, Terry, died shortly before the birth of his granddaughter,
Campbell, author Ellyn Bache wrote Daddy
and the Pink Flash so Campbell would know what a wonderful father he
was and what a wonderful grandfather he would have been.
The book
opens with the line, “A long time ago when Granddaddy Terry was a
young man, Aunt Beth was his first girl baby, just like you are your dad’s
first little girl.” As the story unfolds, Great-Grandma Marian assures
Granddaddy Terry that he won’t do anything wrong with his first baby.
In fact, she encourages him to “enjoy her. Have fun!”
So he does.
We watch Granddaddy Terry lift Beth high in the air in her pink pajamas
as he zooms her around the room, exclaiming, “It’s the Pink Flash!”
As Beth laughs, Granddaddy Terry declares that she is the “bravest
baby in the world.” And Beth believes she is.
With each
new thing that Beth attempts, Granddaddy Terry praises the Pink Flash
for being the smartest, the most athletic, and the most artistic baby in
the world. And Beth realizes it’s all true!
Now, Aunt
Beth is all grown up, and Granddaddy Terry isn’t around anymore, but a
new generation is set to discover the Pink Flash. With skills learned
from his dad, Granddaddy Terry’s son is teaching his own baby girl how
smart and capable she is. “You’re the bravest baby in the world!”
he shouts as she flies fearlessly around the room. Sitting on Daddy’s
shoulders, she’s the most athletic baby in the world. And with the
bubble designs she creates in the bathtub, she’s an artist, too.
This
beautifully illustrated 32-page picture book shows every new dad and
baby girl how exciting their adventure of exploring the world together
will be.
