From the Authors'
Foreword:
The communities in and around Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem
are rich in folklore, as we discovered when researching this book. This
is normal for such a long established and populous area. Ghost stories
have long been favorites among almost everyone around the world. It's
only natural that the Triad of North Carolina should have its share of
these tales. Even the hallowed halls of the Executive Mansion in Raleigh
are apparently blessed with the spirit of a nineteenth-century governor.
The best part of the research
was meeting and interviewing dozens of people from all walks of life.
This delightful group included doctors, sales people, housewives, bank
vice-presidents, social workers, and people of many other occupations,
proving that a spirit can touch the life of anyone. There is no
particular type of character or personality that appears to be immune to
the manifestations of a determined ghost.
Unfortunately, we were not
able to use all the stories we were told. As the book went to press, the
phone was still ringing with folks calling who had just heard about our
research and were offering to tell of their experiences. We found that a
volume of books would be necessary to publish all the ghost stories from
the Triad area. We also heard countless adventures that took place in
other parts of the state or country. Contrary to what many believe,
there is no shortage of ghostly encounters.
Some people believe in
ghosts, some don't. Most of the unbelievers will admit to the possession
of some curiosity about the subject. Whatever your beliefs, we hope you
will enjoy reading about these encounters.
Happy hauntings.
