From the Introduction...
Charleston has been called
the most historic city in America. Having lived here off and on since
1950, I have to agree. As the city changed in the name of progress over
the years, I saw a number of homes and buildings either being altered or
disappear forever.
In an effort to preserve a
historic record of Charleston as it was, I began to collect old postcard
scenes of the city. These cards provide an enjoyable way to remember the
Charleston of my youth and to retain the image of the historic city.
Fortunately, postcards were a
popular method for jotting a friendly note and sharing evidences of
one's travel in the first half of this century. Many people kept these
cards and today they serve as a grand pictorial memory. Collecting post
cards of Charleston has allowed me to combine a hobby with an interest
in local history and to reconstruct a visual image of America's most
historic city.
When Hugh Harkey, a historian
and author who had produced a postcard book for Charlotte, North
Carolina, approached me, I saw a way for my cards to be shared with
others. Hugh gave life to my post cards by telling the stories behind
every building and scene. While each card provides an interesting visual
record, it can only be fully appreciated when one reads the history
behind the picture.
This book is a trip back to
Charleston in the early years of this century. I hope that you enjoy
viewing these cards as much as I did collecting them.
