The Roots of Penderlea combines documentary history and firsthand accounts of North Carolina's path-breaking Penderlea Homestead Farms. What started as a vision became reality in 1934 when, under President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, Penderlea became one of the nation's first experimental agricultural colonies. Through perseverence, dedication, and cooperation, the original homesteaders and their families built a close-knit community from scratch, leaving a legacy that spans multiple generations.
about the author
Ann S. Cottle, a resident of Penderlea since the age of four, is a retired English teacher and past photographer/writer for the Pender Post, where she established the much-read "Backburner" recipe column. She currently serves as chairman and curator of the Penderlea Homestead Museum.
