In an effort to preserve some of St. Simons Island's heritage, Voices from St. Simons records interviews with 17 people whose connection to the island stretches back generations. These longtime residents talk about the late 1800s and the early 1900s as if they occurred in the last decade. They talk about life on the island and in the neighboring Brunswick before the causeway was built. They talk about what they did for entertainment, what their schools were like. They talk about the Battle of Bloody Marsh, Ebo's Landing, Paul Redfern's ill-fated attempt to fly solo from Brunswick to Brazil in 1929, the sinking of cargo ships by German U-boats, and, of course, the hurricanes.
Five of the people interviewed are direct descendants of well-known planters who owned large plantations in and around St. Simons. Six interviewees are direct descendants of slaves, many of whom lived and worked on those same plantations. These interviews reveal interesting relationships between the races through the centuries.
These accounts allow us to sift through the present-day layers of tourist shops and new development to reveal a time and place largely preserved only in the minds of those with long memories.
