Lookout Books (and The Publishing Laboratory of UNC Wilmington)

Lookout Books publishes works by emerging and historically underrepresented voices, as well as overlooked gems by established writers. It was co-founded in 2009 by UNC Wilmington faculty member and Publishing Laboratory director Emily Louise Smith and Ecotone editor emeritus Ben George, now a senior editor of Little, Brown. The literary imprint officially launched in January 2011 with Edith Pearlman's Binocular Vision: New and Selected Stories, which made history as the first book to be named a finalist for all four major national book awards: the National Book Critics Circle Award, the National Book Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the Story Prize. It went on to win the NBCC in fiction and is currently in its ninth printing. Lookout publishes story, essay, and poetry collections; narrative nonfiction; and debut novels. The imprint prides itself on meticulous, collaborative editing and handsome book design-exclusively publishing paperback originals with French flaps-as well as thoughtful and creative marketing and publicity.
