HAL CROWTHER is an award-winning critic and essayist, a journalist whose work has appeared in many magazines including Time, Newsweek, Granta, Narrative, and the Oxford American. A recipient of the H.L. Mencken Writing Award, he is the author of four essay collections and An Infuriating American: The Incendiary Arts of H.L. Mencken. His previous books of essays, Gather at the River, was a finalist for the NBCC prize for criticism. He lives in Hillsborough, NC, with his wife, the novelist Lee Smith. He will be reading and conversing with Michael Parker, author of All I Have in this World and The Watery Part of the World.
