HAL CROWTHER is an award-winning critic and essayist, a journalist whose work has appeared in many magazines including Time, Newsweek, Granta, Narrative, and the Oxford American. A recipient of the H.L. Mencken Writing Award, he is the author of four essay collections and An Infuriating American: The Incendiary Arts of H.L. Mencken. His previous books of essays, Gather at the River, was a finalist for the NBCC prize for criticism. He lives in Hillsborough, NC, with his wife, the novelist Lee Smith.
